Birth Trauma

Trauma during birth can affect both mother and baby in different ways.

Following the birth of the child, the mother may have suffered severe tears and other internal injuries.  This may be detected straightaway and dealt with surgically.  If however it is not detected, the mother may suffer pain and trauma for a further period of time before the problem is uncovered and dealt with correctly.

If you recognise this scenario, then it is likely that you have a claim.

Birth trauma can also result in mental and physical injury to the baby.  The baby can suffer broken bones on occasion and trauma which results in injury to the arm and shoulder if shoulder dystocia occurs.  More severe injuries can mean brain damage and this is caused by hypoxia and ischemia which is the decrease of oxygen and blood flow to a baby’s brain.

Investigation into these cases will mean review of the medical records in relation to the mother and baby and review of any subsequent treatment which the baby has received.  From this we are able to detect whether injury caused to the mother or baby is as a result of birth trauma or whether it is merely a natural process.  If it is the result of birth trauma, a claim can then be brought against the hospital.
